A = is an acronym for an acronym...stands for AOL, which in turn stands for AMERICA ONLINE
I = Instant
M = Mesenger, so:
Full phrase = America Online Instant Messenger....
I would not recommend using it...unless all your friends insist on you using it...try to convince your friends to switch to YIM!

It's another version of Instance Messaging for AOL
I have it but, I never use it because everyone I know uses Yahoo IM.
