The thing about the disney princess is her culture is made like an accessory. She's the traditional white middle class 50's ideal tauting an accent, a different shade of skin and a different cultures clothes. So they may not have made any Black/African-American Princesses yet but whenever they do she'll still just be in the same basic shape to belle, and all the others she'll just we wearing the different culture and the white american understanding of that culture. I wouldn't be too concerned, I'm sure they'll get around to it, but I think it is rather insulting that another cultural identity comes across as like barbie accessories.

I think you hit the nail on the head- it is 2006. In 1956 Disney had no qualms about gender-specific and possibly sexist fairytales. Although "Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" rocked my childhood, those were the last days of the girly-Disney movie. With "Aladin" and "Lion King" they realized that they were better off with plots/main characters that were appealing to both genders. Now they'll only make a princess movie for the big screen if there's an equally appealing prince to go with her.
The point: Marketing and political-corectness caught up with Disney, causing them to phase out classic princess stories at the exact moment that the same factors would have compelled them to make an ethnic princess.

My 10 yr daughter asked me the same question the other day. I told her I did not know. she suggested they should make a movie about Nefertiti or Cleopatra or the Queen of Sheba. By the way Mulan was not a princess. Maybe Disney is right now planning a movie about a black heroine.

Actually, there was also Jasmine, who is Middle-Eastern. Send them a suggestion to do make an animated movie based on an African fairy-tale or real princess. It would make a great movie. The last "princess" they did in Africa was Jane from Tarzan, and even she was white.

If the movie is good, they should release it. They shouldn't rush it out just to meet a racial quota. Is it an African American princess or an African princess?
