Can people hack your comp through a webcam?

I heard a rumor about this.

server? firewall? wtf do i look like - an IT guy? ok - nm that is a diff question.

this is just a regular old USB 2.0 webcam that you point at yourself and invite your chat buddies to see. it is directly connected to an xp pro sp2 based comp. so far as i know, viewing the cam is based on invitation/acceptance protocol.

i bet the person could hack you through the webcam if you had a poster in the background saying this is my password to evrything and here is my social security number so no is an incorrect answer there but this is not likey at so it wont happen

This is kind of a broad question; what type of webcam? Is it behind a firewall? Does the webcam have a server on it? What is the security for it? Theoretically speaking, if you don't have a firewall in place, and the webcam is only protected by username/password, a hacker could access the camera and possibly use it as a jumping off point to compromise your computer, assuming it is on the same network. This would depend on a number of factors though, like what the webcam's server was based off and if it was poorly implemented, and can't be definitively answered based simply off your question.

A good hacker can theoretically use the port that the webcam is operating on which is always open when you have a link to his site, he or she could piggyback a virus code or worm to the video stream and it will enter your computer in that manner.

yes any software that creates a direct connection to your computer through can be hacked it just depends on the skill of the person doing the hack and weather your computer is worth hacking to them
