Grab yourself a copy of the infamous Kate L. Turabian guide to termpapers. It's basically Chicago style but it's arranged in a very logical way. Ms. Turabian was the grammar-marm at the University of Chicago for 30 years in the earlier part of this century. She was apparently a terrifying little woman with a bun and glasses who would tear your paper to shreads and make you feel like your life was meaningless. She was so sick of people not getting Chicago style (named for the university where she worked) that she wrote this book. Turabian/Chicago style is still a pain in the bum, but at least you don't have her grading your paper!
