Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, 1st movement

Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, 2nd movement

Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 6 (extremely gloomy)

Chopin's Prelude Op. 28 No. 4 (easy piece)

Chopin's Mazurka Op. 17 No. 4 (melancholic)

Chopin's Ballade No. 1 and 4 (the main melodies are haunting)

Liszt's Liebestraume No. 3 (more haunting than sad)

Liszt's Consolation No. 3 (same as above)

Joplin's Solace (sad, but more of a sweet sadness)

Ravel's "Ondine" and "Le Gibet" from Gaspard De La Nuit (some of the most haunting pieces ever)

Debussy's Reverie (haunting like a dream)

Probably some Beethoven pieces--specifically sonatas by Beethoven show sad emoitions and slow tempos. I would suggest moonlight sonata 1st movement and probably the Pathetique sonata 3rd movement...both are very popular pieces. Chopin would also be an excellent choice...because most of his Preludes and Nocturnes are very expressionate probably becasue he likes to use E minor...or something like that...hope this helps!

Try some of Erik Satie's 'Gnossienes'. All of them are very harmonic in tonality, and are very beautiful, mysterious and haunting. They seem to be just what you're looking for. I'd especially recommend no. 3.

Not very original, but for haunting melancholy you can't beat Moonlight Sonata.
