it was a typical gesture for generals and military people to have during a portrait....supposedly gives the idea that the person in the portrait is somehow endowed with power...perhaps hidden power

Ah, on of history's embarrassing secrets. For all of his strengths, a healthy stomach was not one of them. The Great Napoleon suffered frequent heartburn and, well, gas.

Like someone picking their nose, once saw him rubbing his sore tummy, and immortalized it, the best thing to do was act as if it was just something he did unconsciously, and it was perfectly normal.

He was paranoid and he had his weapon inside a holster under his tunic and that is why you always seen him with his arm across his chest with his hand inside his tunic.

I think it was deformed. Or it was shorter than the outher. Its been a long time sice I was in school.
