Paul said in Corinthians that everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. You can take that different ways, but I believe this applies perfectly to your situation. It may not be the wisest idea, but it is not sinful.

I'm not familiar with those artists...(child of the 70's) but from my perspective, rap music isn't the most 'Christian' around.
Lyrics where women are degraded. Lyrics where violence is celebrated. Lyrics where it is ok to be a whore, a pimp, a druggie...none of these promote Christian values.
As a personal note, I have a brother who loved a particular rock song. You might have heard of it. Called 'Don't fear the Reaper.' And he would go around the house humming it. When I told him to stop humming that song, he seemed amazed. And asked me why. When I said that the song promoted suicide, he didn't believe me.
Then I repeated several lines of lyrics back to him. And his jaw dropped open. The music was so seductive that he didn't pay close attention to what he was actually hearing.
I don't believe that hearing a song will turn anyone into a psychopath. But if you are a consumer of anything, you need to be an informed consumer. And simply enjoying the beat and the energy, without knowing the lyrics, could be desensitizing you to a deeper meaning. And a deeper problem.
You know the songs. You make up your mind. These are just my opinions.

Well as I christian I try to be so careful what i fill my head with. The reason for that is that no matter how mature and godly i may be, i am a sinner and have a tendency to fall into sin. I find that a lot of the secular songs out there, rap or no rap, goes against my Christian beliefs and what the Bible says. I have some simple guidlines for secular music. I ask my self this:
Do they promote SEX before marriage?
Do they sing about getting drunk?
Do they disrespect God?
Do they encourage me to sin?
I find that most of the songs out there, do all of these things listed. I do listen to secular music though, i just have to be very careful. The one problem i have with rap music is that most of, if not all of the songs sing about sex in a dirty way. Sex was created for married couples. Most of these songs sing about sex between two people who are not married. The Bible says that we are to flee from anything that hints sexual immorality. Thats would include these songs.

If your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, your question should be answered. Does the Bible say rap is wrong? No, of course not, specifically, but does it focus your mind on things above or things on earth (where your treasure is, there your heart will be also). Music does put ideas in your head (as you remember lyrics). It can refocus your desires, your attitudes, etc. Much rap music is music of attitude and not great attitudes. There is much rebellion, sex, and violence within many artist's lyrics.
If you are questioning this, the likelihood is God is already speaking to you. I would strongly consider heeding the advice of your Pastor. After all he is your spiritual shepherd.
P.S. I have had the question about cigarettes, marijuana, and some drugs. My former pastor used to say "There may not be anything said against these things in the Bible, but they will send you to heaven sooner than you planned to go:"

The music is not the problem, it is the message in the music that is in opposition to most religious teachings. If a person is exposed to a negative message often enough, he/she will eventually begin to believe it. That is called brain washing. Of course, all religons brain wash to a certain extent, but the results are usually positive, so it is for the best, right?
If listening to angry and/or violent music helps you to deal with negative emotions, then I say go ahead and do it. It is catharic to express you negative emotions in this way, and you haven't harmed anyone in the process.
The reason why your pastor is discouraging you from even listening to rap music is because rap glamourizes crime and sexual abuse of women. There is a good reason why many rappers end up dead at a young age compared to, say, country-western or techno artists. the lifestyle of crime and music that glamourizes crime is a dangerous on. Your pastor is just watching out for you and your safety and happiness.

If this is a true story. Then your Pastor is right. Are you really a Christian? How do you know? If a sinful lifestyle is attractive to you-then you can not be indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God. If that is the case-then you are not a christian-you just think you are.
That's as plain as I can put it.
If you are a real christian-you will desire to be as far away from sin as possible. It would make you feel uncomfortable to do something wrong.

I am a Christian and I have learned that even though you think lyrics aren't affecting you, they really do. God doesn't give us rules to sap the fun out of life. He is actually trying to free us from those sinful thoughts that ensnare other people. Your ultimate goal in life is to become more like Jesus. So instead of concentrating on exactly which songs are sinful or not sinful, just concentrate on becoming more like Jesus. You may not even want to listen to certain songs when you get in the right mindset. But if you still do it's not necessarily a sin.

I am not familiar with the music. But if the lyrics are not anti-christian in any way, I don't see it as sinful. Certainly not a heaven or hell issue.
However, I try to only listen to christian or instrumental music. Because it is true that our minds are like computers. If we want to walk in the Spirit, we need to be spiritually minded. That can only happen if we are feeding on spiritual things and not wordly. The flesh is against the Spirit, so it is a constant battle.

Listening to Music like that is sinful in Islam as well. I agree with him that it does put sinful thoughts into peoples minds and even the most pious amongst us can be influenced by it in a bad way.

If you are tempting yourself to do these things, then yes, it is foolish. If you just like the style and have realized that most Christian music is ridiculous, I think you'll be okay. Just realize that the artists live different lifestyles than that of one who really believes in God. You might pray about the issue as well.

i face that same issue. my sister is really religious and she really doesnt like it when i listen to rap and other music. to be honest, i believe that it is truly okay..as long as you dont give in and you know right from wrong. we are surrounded by so much sin everyday and half the things we cant even control. you can still keep your relationship with God even if you listen to rap music :)
