Because homosexuality has previously been such a counter cultural way of life, the sense of pressure or public disfavor has put gay men in a kind of defensive position.
As a response to this kind of social pressure the gay man has developed an overly assertive kind of effrontery. That is, a demonstrative in your face sort of behavior.
All of the color, parades, personality, flamboyent displays are a kind of over compensation for an inner feeling of repression, suppression, closetedness, etc.
As a young person, a gay man feels constrained and inhibited by social pressure and convention more painfully than the average person, and as he becomes more public with his lifestyle the tension release is such that he gives himself over to a kind of excessive release.
The over the top behavior of divas resonates with this deeply engrained desire for expression.

I like Cher and Bette. The other two aren't favorites. Perhaps I'm not really gay.
I have never been to any of their concerts, but own a Cher CD.
Never did like Judy or Barb

;I am not a gay man, but I am a lesbian. I can totally understand why gay men love these actresses. first off all they are extremely dynamic, they give of a persona of total independence. They are a strong female which gay men love. They have established themselves in a supposedly male dominated business; that is acting. They are also easy to imitate ;as in a drag show. They also have a underlying male persona that is felt by gay men.

Well, hello there, honest person.
I think you partly know the answer to your question yourself.
The ladies you mentioned are a little TOO womanish, you know? They are, sort of, like transvestites: they try too hard (to look like women, that is). This is not an offense, I'm just trying to say that those ladies appear to have extra estrogen hormones: too grand, too glamorous, too woman-like, too dramatic, too stage-like. Like you say "fabulous" women- a little over fabulous, with all the singing and the glamor, sort of exaggerated, like they feel they need too prove their womanness.
Kind of old skool female stars of Hollywood.

Probably for the same reason that straight guys cry when their sports heros retire. It is just supposed to be that way. And by the way, I like Judy Garland movies, and I'm straight.

Not mandatory at all. Is it against the rules for me to love Cher, Bette, & Liza as a self-respecting bi-girl?

I'm gay and I don't like any of them, I'd much rather listen to NO FX, The Who, Metallica, or Eminem. But I do have to admit the divas do seem to have a pretty big gay following, so big in fact that its become a sterotype, so if somone sees you listening to them or watching their movies they just make an asss of u @ me

Because they represent society's acceptance of not keeping it real and make believe world. These represent a sense of falsehood and let's keep it real gay men are false representations of real women. Real women don't have to be flamboyent. Real women have a sense of natural beauty they have natural assets are naturally beautiful no matter what size, shape, race. Women are colorful and beautiful and hold the key to a real man's heart.

Sweetie, because of the culture we live in most gay men have to bottle up their emotions 98% of the time. Babs and her buddies get to belt them out, and revel in them. What gay man is not going to be attracted to that kind of freedom?
