Hockey referees will call 2 minutes for hooking, then give the player that "embellishes" the hook 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. In watching a little of the world cup, it seems like the players collapse just about any time they're even brushed up against, whine and beg the referee for a call. Wouldn't this stop if there were fouls called for diving?

Actually, soccer players can be given a yellow card for diving. The problem is that the referee cannot always see every bit of contact, so he/she needs to rely on the flow of the players. If there is a blatant flop--for some reason it is usually called in the 18 yard box--the referee will occasionally flash the yellow to the diver.

Diving in soccer is a yellow card offence. In yesterday's Netherlands-Ivory Coast game, Arien Robben was yellow-carded for diving.

this behavoir is only found in certain countries like ITALY! you can get called for diving and actually you can get a yellow card. for some reason refs dont call diving much even though it is a disgusting practice and is way too common.

yeah..they're supposed to give yellow cards for it....FIFA even promised to crack down on it this year.......but the Italy-US game proved they dont actually call it, Italians are pros at it....i love it when they roll around on the ground for 2 minutes....get carried off the field on a stretcher....get the "magic spray" sprayed on their leg and hop back up and sub back into the game...priceless

all that damn spray does is shoot out a cooling agent

I would love to have stiffer consequenses for those who do so that everyone isn't doing that. I can't stand when players do that and actually have the call go their way.

There should be but it would be hard to guess who's diving and who's not though.
