No, no fourth installment. This was a planned trilogy from the very start.

Though the producers have tried to keep the X-men 4 movie at a minimum buzz, they didn't rule out the idea of creating one. As others have stated, I can see a bit of forshadowing into a 4th installment. However, I personally think that they'll move towards the direction of a "Wolverine" film and/or series before they'd begin on an X-4.

Though it was a trilogy they have said that the X men universe is to good not to revisit, and the end of the third with Xavier in the hospital, (for those who stayed until the end of the credits) suggests further that they have left it open for possible sequels.
They say that the most likely story line will see Onslaught as a possible Villain which will make a spectacular film, as this opens the story line where Magneto rips the adamantium from wolvies body which eventually leads to the birth of Onslaught.

I also thought from the ending that there will be a 4th movie. But then I remember from IMDB that there is going to be a movie called Wolverine and maybe that is a continuation from the last movie but they changed the name because from the start they said they wanted a trilogy. Click on IMDB and type in wolverine.

the way I understand it, there will be no 4th Xmen movie, but they are going to spin off the Wolverine character into his own movie

Judging from the ending of the third, I'd say there has to be fourth one.

I highly doubt it. The third movie hacked out some major characters. Who would replace Prof. X - Gambit? (ugh!)
