About 5rs ago I had thyroid surgery and the doctors took out 99% of my thyroid and so now I'm on Synthriod which is a thyroid replacement. I've been hearing stories about women with thyroid problems and them having complications or the baby not being as healthy as it should. I am so nervous b/c I love children and it has been a life long dream of mine to become a mother. Has anyone experienced or know someone who has this problem? Can someone Please help me and give me some advice?

If you are taking the appropriate dose of Synthroid, you shouldn't have a problem. Just be sure to have the levels checked frequently (pregnancy can cause you to need different dosages) so that you know everything is okay. It replaces what your body would have produced if you hadn't had the surgery.

Good luck!!

No, I don't think so. My thyroid went out in '96 and I had 3 children after that. I have been taking Synthriod since then and the only thing you should do is make sure that when you try to conceive, you go to the dr. first and have you TSH checked because it could make your periods irregular and then make conception difficult. Then after you get pregnant, have it checked every 3 months, or when your dr. recommends and don't forget to take it. Remember that it won't be just about you while you are pregnant.

Synthroid is one of the most commonly used medications for women in the reproductive years. It is one of the few drugs that falls into category A meaning that there is evidence to suggest that it is safe for women to take during pregnancy. Although hyper- and hypothyroid states can interfere with ovulation, once you are replaced appropriately, your fertility should be normal.

The only potential issue is why you had the thyroidectomy in the first place. Please ask your doctor whether there are any concerns about conception or pregnancy based on your previous thyroid condition.

I had undiagnosed hypo thyroid with my first and second children. I was on synthroid for my third. No complications AT ALL. Babies were a bouncing 8.6, 8.15, 8.10, respectively.

I've been on Synthroid for 27 years and had two successful pregnancies. I think you will be fine to have children.
