i used to use a martingale in jumping on my old horse because he was rather fiesty and would run at the jumps and lifts his head to high. it could cause problems with his form over the jump and pose a danger to both of us.

A martingale is a piece of tack used on horses to control head carriage. It is seen in the jumping disciplines: show jumping, eventing, and hunter seat riding, as well as in polo. Martingales are not allowed in the sport of dressage.

The two most common types of martingale, the standing and the running, are used to control the horse's head, and to prevent the horse from throwing his head so high that the rider gets hit in the face by the neck. When the horse's head gets above the point of control, the martingale places pressure on the head so the horse cannot raise it higher.

Martingales are used as a training aid to teach head carriage. The ones used in the hunt seat/jumping are used in a different manner than the ones used in saddleseat riding or in western riding. In the English styles( hunt/saddleseat), The martingale is used primarily to keep the horses nose from stretching outward, causing a loss of collection and balance.

They wear them to stop them lifting their heads to high. When they don't have one but sometimes need them they can be a right pain in the backside.
