I read www.snopes.com because urban legends fascinate me. I always run into people that insist some urban legend or another is true and accuse me of calling them a liar when I show them evidence to the contrary.

Yes, It does drive me crazy when someone insists that an urban legend happened TO THEM. I once broke up with a guy for insisting that is had happened to him personally. I was like, "Whatever, I read that exact same story on the internet and you're a liar." If he lies about something as stupid as an urban legend, he would lie over anything!

That's a great question and I also find myself wondering the exact same thing. I often get an email from one of my friends regarding this urban legend or the other...particularly around telemarketers and the national Do Not Call list for cell phones and telemarketers being able to purchase cell phone number lists. I spent many years working for a national marketing membership organization that worked closely with the FCC and the new laws so I am considered somewhat of an expert by my friends. No matter how many times I dispel their fears, they keep resending the bogus alerts that say the government is now allowing telemarketing to call cell phones. I guess to answer your question, people like to believe the government is out to "get them" and they want to believe in the arcane and silly. Most people do not remember that just because something is in print (or anywhere else in the media) that it MUST be true.

Most people are sheep and can be led.

Well, my personality doesn't have to be right ... actually, I'm more of the 'Devils Advocate' personality, and if I sensed that you needed to feel right about the inconsistencies of an urban legend, then I would feel compelled to stand up for the urban legend with my full debating skills that I've acquired.

I know, I'm infuriating but it's who I am - I love debates.

Just ignore the dunces. You can't convince ignorant people of anything.
