I have always feared that towards the knockout stages, soon coming, referees begin to take charge of games and begin to influence their outcame. Have we already started to see that with the USA - ITALY game ? Are we on another 2002 World Cup ? Remember the South Korea 2002 saga... that whichever country played S. Korea the referee weakened them to increase the chances of Korea winning ?! Korea knocked out the best teams in the world... including Spain, Portugal, Italy...They should have been the 2002 champions, not Brazil, LOL ! Something very peculiar was going on in the USA - ITALY match today... With 9 and 10 men, neither team knew what to do anymore !! Their tactics and plans completely gone out of the window... "WHAT THE HELL DO I DO NOW..." and "NOW I SHOULD PASS THE BALL TO THAT GUY BUT HE IS NOT THERE... ONLY SPACE ".....

Reading some of these answers, (and Brazil has just score thier second goal) it is nice not to feel alone in this fear of this becoming yet another Referees' World Cup.

Sifting through all this anti-American rhetoric only brings out the patriotism in me (and anyone who knows me knows how critical I can be of my own country, especially its political leaders). Keep it up, Eurotrash, you're making enemies of friends with every nasty utterance you make.

In answer to your question, you are absolutely right to be concerned about terrible officiating determining the World Cup champions. That referee in today's US-Italy match was a bloody disgrace! He bought into every single dive the Azzurri made (which were just endless), calling fouls on the Americans and doling out red and yellow cards like candy. It was by far the worst officiated match of this World Cup -- so far.

I very definitely share your concerns about what is to come, Francis, as I vividly recall the rubbish calls that dictated the outcomes of several critical matches in the 2002 Cup. FIFA really needs to get on top of this situation before it gets completely out of hand. We watch these competitions to see the players on the opposing teams decide the match, NOT the damned officials!

I don't know.... I think he was right in his calls. One of the USA red cards was on account of getting two yellow cards - I thought both yellow card offences were valid. The Italy red card was obviously right, and I think the USA red card on the two-footed tackle was correct. At this level of play, all players are skilled enough and smart enough not to make such a dangerous tackle - you could definitely break someone's ankles with a two-footed tackle. While agree that the officitating in 2002 was a little questionable, I think this game was refereed correctly.

As for being down one or two men.... soccer tactics are not that hard to change or adjust to. If you play soccer, you would know that. Soccer tactics follow very basic patterns that are based on three-to five-men sets that are repeated down the field. And again, these players are so skilled that being down a man or two should not phase them. It can tire them out, but it shouldn't affect how they know what to do on the pitch. Less men means more space - correct, but players will know how to fill that space if they really want to win.

this is because this type of rules have been considered before two weeks of world cup. so referees do not get prepsred well for this changes. besides thjat referees also are very harsh to the players. all this refrees should punish by FIFA.. but unfortunately wecant change the score line....

He has a name, Jorge Larrionda and he did a stand-up job the US is too retarded to realize when you are a man up you should play smarter not foul every ten seconds like some pompous freaks.

Korea lost to Germany in 2002, because they weren't as good as Germany. So shut the fuckup
