At my job, there are actually a few coworkers I don't know that well and when I talk with them, it's difficult to determine if they are being serious or just being shy.

Is there any way to identify these personalities and traits in a discrete way?

It doesn't have to be one or the other, you know. The person could be both serious and shy. I speak from experience. A way to find out if a person is serious, at least, is ask what they like to read, or what are they reading now? Shy people also sometimes read a lot, since they often fear interaction with real people. You would probably be doing them a favor by reaching out to them with some interest in them. Just be aware, though, a really needy person might make you their best friend and you get in over your head.

Do you want to let the world know that you are not shy or people around you? You need to get out there and be the leader of your group of friends, you could do things like suggesting to go to fun places like nude beaches, or just go to a normal beach and go topless, or you could just wear a nice black bra on the street/shops. Drinking alcohol also helps. Just a few helpful suggestions, i assume this was posted in the singles and dating for a reason, otherwise i would have had a different response.

ALWAYS assume the very BEST in everyone!

From the get-go, determine in your mind that these people are your friends, and you LIKE them. Then TREAT them as if you ESPECIALLY like them, even though you are still apprehensive.

And even when they get rude or something, give them an excuse in your mind...like you would do your kids or someone you really love "oh they're not feeling well or they're really stressed". Don't say anything to them at the time, and then maybe the next day or something, if it fits, say something like "are you feeling better today? Seemed like you were a bit stressed yesterday"

If a person is shy, it should be apparent they're reluctant to talk much less be in a group setting. The ones that are serious usually will tell you. The one category which is essential to character that you left out would be the person that possesses "humor". They can be shy and serious!

I always think of serious people as people who aren't afraid, but they lacking in the humour or light-hearted department. Like they look you in the eye when you're talking, they just don't laugh a lot. I think of a shy person as someone who is afraid or uncomfortable. I would assume they would avoid eye contact and would laugh nervously.

You'll find out by asking them questions. First find out in my mind what you want to find out. Then create questions which lead to what you want to know.

Take time to sit with them, get to know them. There's a book called Am I Making Myself Clear by Terry Felber.

Big help for me to find serious people who ain't just talk. It's a small book but powerful and it has an excercises you can carry out too. That's what I did and had fun.

there really isn't. sometimes peple just don't want to be bothered with the work place garbage. you know gossip. i like you .you hate them sort of thing. they just stay to themselves.when they are ready to trust in some situations, they will start with a little small talk to break the ice. do not give up on them be friendly and let them become comfotalble with you.

I think that you can tell alot by their body language; do they look away or down when talking? Do they avoid conflict ? If so, they might be considered shy.

In my oppinion, the best thing to do is get ting to know them. Talk to somebody that you have already met. Ask them if they could help you. If they cannot help you, try to confront them with your problem.
