Yes, they used to use a pot, hence the phrase potty trained. Same idea, only larger for adults.
Often in cities they would just throw the refuse out the window, with the shout "Gardyloo" a derivation of the French, to guard out below.

Rich houses used to have a room with a hole in the floor. This emptied into the street below. So the rich really did poop on the poor...
