I think that the ref was just inconsistent with the calls and the red card to Pablo Mastroeni was not justified at all. At most it deserved a yellow card for a late tackle but definitely not a red card. The yellow card given to Eddie Pope which resulted in a red card was also completely stupid! The red card given to the Italian player Daniele De Rossi was justified because it was an obvious and intentional foul. The refs also called offsides on the Italians when the player was onside. The ref of the game had been put on probation before also for making bad calls.

I agree with megalomaniac. I think the referee got the game "more or less right." There were a lot of bad tackles and calls are not based on the skill level of players. If you don't tackle right and commit a foul it's a foul whether you are capable of making a proper tackle or not. I would know I am a referee myself.

This match was not determinded by the officials at all. I think the referee just followed the rules. All I saw was one offsides that the lineman missed right at the end (italy was off and he didn't call it). I personally think the referee did a good job.

Just keep in mind, these refs are all the best in the world, the best from each country. If they can't referee these games then I don't know who can.

NO. I saw the whole game and in a difficult game to call, I think he got it more or less right.

The Americans to their credit tried hard but they were way too aggressive right from the start of the game. The Italians responded poorly too. The elbow from the Italian guy definitely deserved a red card .

However, there was so much clutching and grabbing and poor tackles by the Americans that they did indeed deserve to play with 9 men and maybe fewer. The only thing that I would have done differently was to give more yellows. The Americans didn't even deserve a tie.

It seems the US game plan was to get under the skin of the overly passionate Italians and it appeared to have worked. Shameful on both sides - don't blame the referee!

no..it was just that tempers ran high during the match..like i've said b4 in someone else's Q, what he did wasn't his fault..he was just adhering to the new stricter FIFA regulations about rough play..the two earlier red cards were really deserved..if u watched the match,u'd know..i mean, the guy even bled from that intentional elbow..it's not the ref's fault..all the players played rough during this match..everyone seemed to blame him coz he's the first ref to be issuing so many red cards in one match..i watched the whole thing,i totally understood his actions..it was a ludiscrous match if u ask me..do they have some kind of pent up grudge between the teams or what??well, even the commentators here (Aussie) seemed to agree with the ref..really rough play today..*shrugs*

I think it's hard being American and seeing your team being disciplined as the ref did to them. But the ref did follow the rules of the game, and all 3 red cards were warranted.

They should have pointed out more of how extremely lazy we got the last ten minutes. And that ref will definitely not ref the World Cup again.

It was an odd match to say the least. There were three of the exact same fouls. One received a penalty kick, another a yellow, and another a red! It was not fair to either team. I hate to see a match determined by the actions of the officials.

Haha - yes that ref was ridiculous. I think being unbiased is important - but he was brutal and I know I am not alone in that sentiment!!
