The necessities for good exploration
1. A few good scientists who are brilliant but don't know it all--they just want to know it all.
2. Some good physicists. They've got to be able to make valid predictions on how things will react in different space environments (ie. planets, the space craft, etc.)
3. Some good pilots. Safe risk takers.
The following are essential for survival. As humans, there are some needs that must be met for us to not only survive, but to truly live.
4. A damn good cook. 'nuff said. There's nothing like being on a long camping trip and have the same old nasty stuff served every day. Life needs a little variety.
5. A psychologist with a sense of humor. This guy's got to be able to take care of the stresses of cabin fever and homesickness associated with long journeys.
6. A good Doctor/Physical therapist. Got to take care of that body.
7. Some quality entertainment for those times when the crew needs a break. TV and DVD's are great, but you can only watch King Kong and Sleepless in Seattle so many times before wanting to jump ship.
8. A sterile harlot or two in a room with a glass door that says "break glass in case of emergency". Hey, it's going to be a long trip.
disclaimer: For every person listed, you need a spare that is kept locked away in a comatose state just in case the others on board get tired of the awake one and he/she comes up "missing."

As an avid sci-fi fan, I'd have to say that Star Trek provides the template for any answer to a question such as this. Not only would you need technical staff to actually run the ship on your fictional project, but you'd also need ancillary staff to help with the inner workings of human existence in space away from the comforts and protections afforded by planet Earth. Such staff would include doctors, nurse, cooks, teachers (for school-age children, perhaps), and depending on the level of technology available on this fictional voyage staff to attend to the basic needs of replenishing the food and water supplies. There would also be a need to have some staff to oversee the disposal of waste products on the journey. Essentially, you need a microcosm of what we have here on Earth. Good Luck on your trip! :)

the reply to this can be a widespread definite. although, i'm afraid that the overall public of Canadians does no longer settle for such use of public money and that is a shame. human beings will see such spending as ineffective and frivolous. yet in the subsequent 10 years, many countries will enter a sparkling area race in which america, Russia and China frequently is the important gamers. Why no longer contain Canada as an significant different to the US in this race? Why shouldn't we've our area heroes as those different international locations would have (or already have)? Our astronauts are properly experienced and are as sensible as their American companions. can we decide the straightforward way and say no or settle for the project and deliver a Canadian to the Moon and perchance Mars ultimately? Why shouldn't we be allowed to have such aims like those different international locations? Are we that undesirable and unimaginative? i desire no longer.

Science officers, doctors, navigators, engineers. Communications specialists in case you run into any extraterrestrials. Astronomers, especially people who can map the space around you.
