Ovulation tests catch the LH surge (the hormone that causes you to ovulate). Depending on where in the surge you managed to catch it, it may read positive for more than one day. Because you generally ovulate 12-36 hours after the surge, if you catch the beginning of the surge and the end they will both be positive. If you catch the middle, however, and the next time you test the surge is gone...it will be negative.
You are usually fertile the day of and the day after a positive - again, it depends on where in the surge you detected it. :)

An ovulation test will only register an LH (luteinizing hormone) surge. It occurs, then it is over. This is a sign that your body is preparing for ovulation. Ovulation may or may not, in fact, occur (sometimes, you have a second LH surge a few days later that actually leads to ovulation). But it is normal to have only a one-day positive. You are usually fertile for at least one full day after the LH surge.
However, for more accurate information on your cycle, please read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler. It will be more helpful than using an ovulation test--and it's free, too (not the book, although you *can* borrow it, but the *use*).

When you ovulate, it occurs within 12-36 hours after a positive ovulation test. If you have ovulated shortly after taking the first test, then it makes sense that the second would be negative, because ovulation would have already occured. Ovulation predictor tests are to show you when you are going to ovulate before it actually happens, because the hormones surge 12-36 hours before ovulation.

When its positive, it means your going to ovulate with in the next 72 hours. It doesnt have to be positive for more than one day. The hormone detected by ovulation tests is at different levels through out your cycle. If it was positive, then you probably ovulated today.

Once you get a postive opk it can take 12-48 hrs to ovulate, so no you can get a postive opk for a few days. If you got a postive than neg you probaly already ovulated and your one of those that ovulate between 12-24 hrs from the time you got the postive opk.

That's right :) Some women will see progressively darker +'s and some will go from nothing...to a big fat + and back to nothing again.
Get busy :)
