How involved? Do you think they are masterminding it or running it or controlling it somehow? Maybe they are background checking the players? Could they be overseeing it like keeping it secure?

The US are understood to have pressured the Germans not to allow the Iranian Presdent in to German if he wants to see Iran play. I don't think George Bush thought that up on his own, so the answer is probably yes if only indirectly
