Queen Elizabeth I [of England's] favorite suitors?

They were Robert Devereaux who was the Earl of Essex, Robert Dudley who was the Earl of Leicester, Philip II of Spain, and Francis, Duke of Alencon.

Elizabeth never married. She entertained both Protestant and Catholic suitors while committing to no one. She used her single status as a policy tool. By entertaining Catholic suitors she kept hostile Catholic monarchs at bay, and English Catholics loyal to her government. When she was interested in Sir Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester she avoided entering a marriage with Sir Robert because the match lacked any political benefits. Some theorize that because of the way her father, Henry VIII, treated his wives, Elizabeth was disgusted by the idea of marriage.

While Elizabeth never married, she managed to successfully play her suitors off one another for about 25 years, gaining alliances and wealth from gifts on the possibility of marriage. The one serious contender for her hand was Francis, Duke of Alençon of France, but negotiations eventually failed.
