Some elements become more violent simply because vioence was nurtured into their development. Parents face challenges when educating their children. They are in competition with the media and their children peer groups.

I also feel that violence engenders more violence and while i agree that society has always been violent, i would say that as long as newspapers, news channels enjoy such great ratings reporting over acts of violence, they make such vioence acceptable to children who become immune to it.

I live in ireland, loved in the north during what have become known as 'The Troubles'. Children became used to street violence, they accepted shootings and bombings as part of their life and it made them prone to disregard any act of violence as totally unimportant, 'just one of those things'.

So i would say that yes indeed society has now become more violent.

Studying early history tells us that society has been extremely violent from the beginning of time. I don't know how we could ever top cruelty and inhumanity the Romans inflicted back in the Coliseum. Each and every era since that time has held countless atrocities against another civilization. Many civilizations have become instinct because of this. Archeologists are digging up evidence of this all the time. I don't think the world has become "more" violent, but I'm not sure we've gotten much better.

I think it's about time we DID though, don't you?

In my opinion, society is more peaceful today. Hundreds to thousands of years ago, the world was imperialist in full swing. From the times of Alexander the Great to Genghiz Khan to Adolf Hitler, there has been blood shed for power and glory. It was after the second world war that the idea of democracy was preached and promoted by the US. It would be naive on my part to call the world violence free today, but in my opinion, it is much better than it used to be.

i actually believe society is doing better. a loooong
way from perfect but better. what you are seeing is
better communication and more understanding that
some actions really are violence. abuse of women
and children by the man of the house was once con-
sidered no ones business, for instance, but is now
understood to be violent and wrong.

It's hard to say, different people/places/time periods had their own different issues. Terrorists, murders, and people that make children fight in war is def more violent.
