A saloon refers to a four door car like a Hyundai Sonata. It has for doors and a seperate trunk space. Whereas a hatchback is like a Toyota Celica. They mostly have two doors and the trunk is not seperated from the passenger compartment. There are a few new hatchbacks out there like the Mazda 5 that has four doors and a hatch also. The rule of thumb is if you open the rear of the car and the rear window opens with the trunk lid, it's a hatchback.
