Traditionally, the elastic is on the short sides of the mattress (head and foot), but recently I've found fitted sheets with the elastic on the longer sides.
I guess it's just a matter of how the manufaturer decides to design the sheets.

It goes on the top and bottom, however some sheets have elastic all the way around.

Ours is on the sides but it depends on the manufacturer. See which way it fits, that's what we always end up doing.
