In a difficult game to call, I think he got it more or less right.
The americans to their credit tried hard but they were way too aggressive right from the start of the game. The Italians responded poorly too. The elbow definitely deserved a red card but the Americans could have had several more in my opinion.
There was so much clutching and grabbing and poor tackles by the Americans that they did indeed deserve to play with 9 men and maybe fewer. The only thing that I would have done differently was to give more yellows. The Americans didn't even deserve a tie.
It seems the US game plan was to get under the skin of the overly passionate Italians and it appeared to have worked. Shameful on both sides - don't blame the referee!

I am American and learning about soccer(football) through this World Cup. But when I was watching this game I was thoroughly disgusted with the ref. A good friend of mine has played soccer his whole life and he feels the same way too. This ref should never be allowed to referee a game again!! I would feel the same way if it was any other game not involving the US.

NO most AMerican do not understand that when you slide tackle your foot is to TOUCH THE BALL NOT THE player. again when slide tackling the players foot is to touch the ball NOT the player
and that is why most Americas are crying over the red card for that play
Pope was given a verbal warning and a yellow card and he still did not listen to the ref and got a red card
again team USA fans are crying like babies

My god, what a ref, so much went un-called on both teams. I hope the ref has been retired by FIFA. What a tragedy of a game. If i were him i would rewatch the bogus calls he made and repnent to the gods of soccer.

yeah, the ref did suck. thats why all the announcers and analysts said they'll be surprised if he refs another game. this ref was suspended in the 2002 world cup for irregularity, and he still sucks. he's faced criticism from other refs also.
And for the one or two people who said the U.S. played poorly, you're obviously biased.

I think this ref stinks of anti Americanism. Look i'm not American, but this is the worst ref i have seen in this world cup. Get the bum some thick glasses.

The players need to wake up...
USA is playing better in the second half I hope they will play with more precision to make a goal.
