I lived in Munich for two years and its my favorite city in the world. It can be very expensive but to lower the price, try finding a good gasthaus (guest house) in one of the village outiside Munich on the S-bahn (commuter train) lines. One of the prettiest is at the end of the line in the village of Tutzing at the end of the S-6 line. Its really pretty and lies on the shore of Starnberger See (Lake Starnberger).

A good place to find a gasthaus at the last minute is the tourist office in the Hauptbahnhof (main train station). They have English speaking staff who will call for you to make the reservation.

For getting around, you can get daily passes good for all the U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains and they are good on the city buses too.

If you want to party, head to the University District of town near the Englisher Garten. This area is called Schwabing. If its hot, head out into Englisher Garten (as long as you dont mind nudity). There you can find beer and music throughout the day.

Have fun. No matter how long you stay, you will never run out of things to see and do.
