you should get other goldfish for tank mates. clean the tank every 2 weeks and get an algie eater or a couple of snails. you might want to consider buying a couple of small water plants to give off oxygen.buy the biggest tank you can afford . feed your fish about 2 times a day , but feed sparingly so the tank doesn't get dirty . also , don't place your tank in natural lighting because it makes algie grow fast . only put on a light at night .Good luck!

If I were to tell you everything you needed to know on how to take care of a goldfish I would be here all day. I'll go over some basics but I suggest you check out the link at the bottom, I love that site and they people there are so friendly.

Fancy goldfish need a minimum of 10 gallons each, they can be fine for a little bit in something smaller but they really do need something that size or bigger. The first 6 months to a year are the most important, if they are not fed right, giving the right size tank or clean cycled water they can become stunted, sickly or die. Feed them twice a day a good staple food (like progold, hikari or omega one) and they like treats like deshelled peas, bloodworms and brine shrimp.

A light doesn't matter but it does make the tank look better and gives the fish a sense of time of day. Having a good sized filter is a must, one that filters 10x the amount of water (if you have a 10 gallon tank the filter must do 100 gph). Since goldfish are so messy you need it to keep the water clean and to have enough room for the beneficial bacteria to colonize, it also keeps the water surface moving which in turn keeps the water oxygenated.

Once the tank is cycled (which you can learn all about on the site) the tank only needs to be cleaned when the test show the nitrAtes are getting too high. Which could be anywhere from every couple days to once every 2 weeks, it really depends on if your tank is over stocked or not. But while your tank is going through the cycle you really need to keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrItes, they are both deadly to your fish. If you get yourself a gravel vac its really easy to do water changes and never clean the whole tank out the chlorine in the tap kills all the beneficial bacteria so only do around 50% each time.

1) 10 gallons of water for each goldfish (bowls are out of the question, unless its a 10 gallon bowl with a filter!)

2) you MUST provide a filter. The above suggested advice is great. If you have a ten gallon tank, look for a filter that is rated at 100 gph.

3) You must change at least 25% of the water EVERY WEEK, not two weeks.

4) Dont forget to add water conditioner every time you add or change water.

5) Get yourself familiar with what the "cycle" of your tank means. Its important to know. You may want to consider perchasing water tests for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH. Also helpful are tests for kh. I have found Ive needed that, but not often unless Im monitoring something specific. Some pet stores can test your water for free if you dont want to buy a kit. Test your water at least once a week. Test it BEFORE you change your water to see if you need to make any adjustments with how much water you take out during your water change.

This is good for starters, but like mentioned, try:

Its great for goldfish beginners. This site will tell you everything you need to know and the information is accurate. The forums are a great place to ask questions if you cant find it somewhere on the site.

Here is a link to some of the basics I just told you....

Goldfish are fairly easy to take care of. No. 1---- Only feed him/her twice a day with Goldfish food only. No.2.--------- They produce alot of ammonia, you can purchase a product at walmart known as PRO-V. These are little blue and white stones that go into the tank, and they help to absorb the ammonia. You change them out every 30 days. No.3.--------- All Fish need to have light for about 8 hours a day, and the other 8 in the dark. They do not have any eye lids to protect their tiny eyes. No. 4------------Change the water according to how big of a tank you are going to buy. A one gallon tank can usually go for about a week in between changing. Also, If you use tap water, YOU MUST use a product that you add to the water that removes the chlorine and other chemicals before you put your fish in it. Other wise, the chlorine will kill it. Have fun decorating your tank. Gold fish like to go "inside" of things as well. Enjoy.

My favorite website for aquariums is listed below. Goldfish need a large tank, a goldfish bowl is not big enough, and you are right, there is a lot you need to know to be a responsible pet owner.

I have listed my favorite website below. They have many articles, and I have found the people at the forums to be very helpful and friendly.

I am glad that you want to provide good care for your fish.

Remember to put a plant in to re-oxygenate the water or get a pump for the oxygen.
