Every night for months on end he's made the same noises during sleeping. It is nothing like any of the vocalizations here ( http://www.ratbehavior.org/norway_rat_vocalizations.htm ) and they're rather deep and quite loud. It probably happens about 10 times a night while he sleeps, but during the day when he's sleeping I hardly ever hear this problem. During making these sounds he also goes into a very heavy sleep where even screaming his name at the cage doesn't wake him up. I have to physically touch him to jolt him awake and, unfortunately, this is the only way to get the sounds to pause as well. (He does know his name, however, and comes when he's called so it's not that he doesn't register it's him being called.)

That I can tell he's not in pain. Out of the cage he IS a frequent chatterer and when I first got him he was also a loud squeaker, but he's grown out of that the more he's been handled. He's less than a year old and I've had him since he was about two months.

most likely he is dreaming, all animals tend to at one point or another dream about something...and can make them grumble or make some other type of noise....this is a normal behavoiur and i wouldn't worry about it...think about as if you were talking in your sleep...and since your rat was very vocal to begin with, it doesn't suprise me that he does that...rats are funny little critters

have a vet check him. maybe he actually has sleep atmea( spelled wrong) , you know, the kind humans can get. maybe there is some sort of sleeping problem.

just get him checked out and see what the vet can recommend.

Good luck!
