They are good sketches but i always feel they are ugly or I'm not putting enough effort.

You are doing something they can't do.

People compliment my piano playing and I have a hard time accepting it because I know all the flaws. There's something that happens in art where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I think we as artists concentrate on the parts so much and people who appreciate our art see the whole more than we do. Everyone has a different reaction to art. It is inspiring.

Be nice to people who compliment you, Say Thank You. Tortured artist are the best artists. If you want to be prolific, learn where to draw the line between being tortured for your art and your mental health. Just don't torture people who appreciate your results.

You should give your self some credit, at least you put yourself out there for criticism. I can rarely allow a close Friend to read my writing, That's a big step. I'm guessing your problem is you r a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to your passion, when i used to draw i always looked back and thought it could be better, same now with the writing. You just have to take their word for it, show people who don't know you and don't tell them you drew it, that will insure an honest answer, rather than say your best friends or family. If a stranger says it good not knowing he would be criticizing your work you know your better than you think. Artists tend to be very passionate, self-critical, but very private when it comes to their personal expression. But if this is the field your looking to get into your going to have to put yourself out there more and more, for better or worse. We always see the worst in ourselves. Keep working on it. I had a sketch i went back and messed with for 2 yrs b4 i felt i couldn't do anymore without wrecking it. You are your own worst critic

I'm always far more critical of my own work than anyone else is.

Unless you think people are just being nice. If you think people are really telling you the truth, then you're probably just your own worst critic.

Sometimes this can be a good thing, though. It means that you'll never settle for mediocre. Of course, you might drive yourself crazy... but I hope you'll never get too hung up on being a perfectionist. Good luck.

Sounds like Sensitive issues are your specialty

Slow down! If you keep going at this pace, you will miss out on some exciting stuff.

Compliments build self esteem, except them with pride, your doing " The Best You Can" the more you experience your talents in drawing, the magic appears
Slow down and take it all in

Prob. because the people giving those comments don't have the artistic skill you do. for ex. if you were to watch someone you knew play a song on the piano and they messed up slightly you might not recognize the mess up and think it was great. Ask a fellow artist. Also I think when it comes to stuff like this we are always hard on ourselves for some reason everyone thinks they can do better.

We are our own harshest critics. Here's a lovely quote from Martha Graham:

"No artist is ever pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time; there is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others."

because for some reason, people always seam to find fault with there work, even if it is good. Most likely they are good and you just always think that they could be better

Just keep practicing. Adolf Hitler gave up on his drawings and painting and went into politics. Don't let this happen to you.

because you have a low self esteem and you tell yourself constantly you couldve done this or fixed that and it would look better, you expect to much out of yourself- just relax and except your good and take complimants.
