First downs occurs when the football; has been moved ten yards forward from the starting position in 4 or less attempts. Once the first down has been achieved it repeats until the teem makes a touchdown or they fail to make a first down and have to kick the ball to the other team.

When a team makes 10 yds. Now for example on 1st down they gain 3 yards, that makes it 2nd down and 7 yards to go and they need to get 7 yards for the first down.
