Lowe's is the best company to work for if you don't have a college degree, but you are ambitious. They have a matching 401K, vacation, sick leave, free short-term disability, cheap long-term disability and life insurance benefits. They have really good health insurance plans that are not expensive (around $150 per paycheck for the best healthcare plan in the country). If you have any clerical experience, I recommend the new HR assistant position they've created, or the admin office clerk position. If you have sales experience, the Sales Specialists can make between 25k-60k per year to start (depending on location and experience). If you have management experience, the Department Manager position is very competitive, with qualified managers starting at 25k-40k per year (depending on location and experience). If you have no experience, but are hard working and ambitious, you can start as a regular Customer Service Associate, become a Team Leader within 6 months, and be a Department Manager in a year to a year and a half. From there, if you can handle the complex task of being a Department Manager and you shine, you can be a Zone Manager (which pays REALLY well and has something like a 60% yearly salary bonus) about a year and a half to two years after getting promoted to Department Manager you can get into their Manager Training Program to be a Zone Manager. I know a girl who started as a cashier at age 18 and became a Store Manager at age 27. (Store Manager's usually make close to six figures and have over 150% yearly bonus potential). She payed more in taxes on her annual bonus than I made in salary last year.

I'm sure that there are lots of great companies where you can work and have opportunities for advancement, which also offer great benefits, without having the benefit of a degree; however, the majority of these jobs are available in the service and construction industries. Most jobs available in these industries can be physically demanding, or may require working special hours (including nights, and weekends.) But, I have heard whisperings that these would be great companies to look into whether, or not, you have a degree: google, e-bay, in-n-out, chipotle mexican grill, hewlett-packard, disney, pixar, jack-in-the-box (just to name a few.)

The State government has room for level entry positions and pays pretty well for college grads. I worked for the State of Florida for 40 years and retired as a college prof. The State paid my doctoral tuition and now my pension which is pretty competitive as well.
