The child might be disabled too and she took a lot of stuff that looked like drugs. I'm going to write a report for school and say that the film is feminism gone amuck. Just because you're repressed doesn't give you the right to take advantage of the disabled. Am I wrong to be upset about it?

For her, it was the only thing she could give Forrest. She was so damaged emotionally that a mate-type relationship wasn't an option. Their love was a strong bond even in spite of his intelligence. And if you think about it, Forrest was emotionally smarter than anyone. He knew what he felt inside and never hesitated to tell anyone. maybe he is the normal one? Should it be normal for people to NOT tell others that they love them, when they do?
So, no. I don't think she took advantage of him. I think she tried to give him a piece of her heart, and that was the only way she knew to show him.

i don't agree with you. in the movie Jenny loves Forrest Gump, she knows he's "slow" (i wouldn't say retarded) but she loves him and Forrest knows what he's doing, he loves her, so she doesn't take advantage of him, absolutely.
then, yeah Jenny takes drugs, but i don't think she had sex, better, made love with Forrest because she was depressed, repressed, a feminist or whatelse.
about the baby, when she became pregnant she didn't take drugs anymore and problems as Forrest's ones are not genetic (Forrest's parents, for example, haven't his same problems) so the child might not be disabled just because his father is slower than others.
i hope you got the point: it's just a movie but these things actually happens so it's hard and maybe not so "right" after all to judge "a priori" (i don't know how to say it in english...uhm, basing your judgement on fixed ideas, maybe).

The stigma surrounding mentally retarded people is enormous, but even greater is the stigma of them having a family with children. Mentally retarded people are no different in their feelings, except many face more difficulties because of their disability.

Forrest was slow and lacked common sense at times but he is a person. Who's to say love comes with status!

Forrest Gump has a completely different theme than the one you're harping on.

A kid with a number of difficulties went on to become successful, decorated, happy, and rich. He experienced more in a short time than any of us will experierience in a lifetime.

Focusing on micro bits of a big picture points to narrow focus.

Back off a little and watch it again. Laugh large.

By the way, Jenny knew Forrest almost all of their lives. They were best friends.

Forest Gump was mildly retarded and was capable of being an excellent father. He was retarded because of incompetent medical staff and was not necessarily born retarded. He was a fully functioning member of society and very successful. He overcame his disability...but his character gave me the impression that he didn't know he was disabled and it didn't keep him from experiencing life like any other man....so Was he really disabled or mentally retarded after all? There are people who are considered intelligent that are not as successful as Forest Gump. she was more disabled than Forest after all...she was a drug addict. He wasn't taken advantage of. He loved her and she loved him. As an abused drug addict...she had no chance of a healthy relationship with any other man than Forest Gump.

You aren't wrong to be upset...just kinda dumb. If you recall, Forrest said he loved her and wanted to marry her. When that happened, she said she also loved Forrest. People who love eachother sometimes have sex.

The real crime is that she probably gave Forrest and her son HIV, since I think that's what she died from.

Jenny was also a raving *****. After all, Forrest was dedicated to her the whole time he knew her. He wrote her a letter every day when he was in Vietnam, and she just blew off responding to him.

I don't think she took advantage I think she wanted him to exprience that at least once in his life. She knew he loved her. She also knew what a mess she was becasue her father abused her as a kid. she was messed up which is all part of the complicated part of what makes life life. I think there are alot of things to note if you really observe the mother had sex with a school official so he could get into normal school. There was alot of bending morals for the "greater good" as it were. That dosen't necessarily make it right but that is what happened. Just like life.

I never thought of that... excellent observation. I don't know where feminism comes into it though. May want to incorporate how the cycle of abuse was perpetuated - Jenny was sexually molested as a child, went on to abuse a mentally disabled individual (allegedly, I don't know what laws are in place as to exactly HOW disabled someone would be in order for it to be inappropriate).

its just a movie, and he wasnt as mentally disabled as most people. And remember they grew up together and were friends since childhood. He was fully conscious and knew what was going on. However, if he didnt know what she was doing then yes that would be rape..

But again think about it... the movie was set in history and things were different back in the 70s

I am in disagreement with you on this one.....ok...so he was slow....BUT he wasnt exactly mentally retarded....he was in the military...he walked the US...he was very intelligent...he had his own business.....& yes...he had a child with Jenny......BUT...he was in full knowledge of all that happened to him...he took care of himself & then had to take care of the child.....just because someone is slow...doesnt mean they can not carry on like a so called "normal" person.....One of cousins are Married to someone that is like Forrest Gump.....he is a very good Husband...Daddy...& a good provider for the household...he carries a Full Time job..& was in the Military as well.....he is good man.....it takes some time for him to fully understand some things, but we all love him & respect him for who he is...
