Use this opportunity to get rid of accumulated crap. Toss/donate items.

Label boxes before you begin to pack them, so you'll know what room to put them in when you get to your new location.

Don't overload boxes, so they're easy to carry. Better to have more lightweight boxes than a few really heavy ones.

Have LOTS of friends help you. Reward them with food and drink. If you're moving within the same city, have a group of people at your old location (helping with moving boxes out) and at the new location (to move boxes in), with a van that travels back and forth.

If you're moving up or down stairs (and have the aforementioned bunch of friends), put people all along the stairs to pass boxes, rather than walking up and down stairs.

Clearly mark fragile boxes, and move them last. If you're moving a long distance, take the time to pad fragile items, using bubble wrap.

And it's worth the money to hire a moving company to move really heavy items (coaches, pianos, etc.). Or, if you can afford it, hire them to do the whole job. The savings in frustration and angst is usually worth it.

Stay organized and know where all your stuff is, and where it's all going when you pack. Then it's just a matter of taking stuff out and putting it in boxes or suitcases.

And get suitcases with lots of suitable pockets. It'll help you keep track of things better - easier if everything has its designated place.
