NO LEWD RESPONSES PLEASE.
It so happened that last time after I made out with my boyfriend (no penetration stuff) he said we had had sex. Is sex different from an intercourse?

Sex,coitus, intercourse are interchangeable words that are describing the act of actual penetration. You and your boyfriend engaged in foreplay, if their was no penetration, their was no sex.

Sex is not any different from sexual intercourse. The only other definition of sex that comes to mind is gender identity.
If penetration occured, indeed the two of you had sexual intercourse, if not then no you didn't.
I mean no offense, but if your boyfriend can't distinguish the difference, perhaps he isn't ready to be doing this.
Tell him to look the two definitions up in a dictionary.

After reviewing all these answers, I find it hard to believe this. Do we not remember President Clinton when he denied haveing sexual relations of any kind with Monica? They had a LOT of sex but not sexual intercourse. Come on, give me a break. He finished her off with a long cigar.

If you have to ask this question, you should not be having either because you are too naive and lack sufficient knowledge to take care of yourself.

Just for the record: People can define words any way they wish. You and your boyfriend are disagreeing about semantics--the meaning of the words. Instead, you should be talking about what you both need to do to be more responsible in your relationship, so you can hopefully avoid disease or unwanted pregnancy.
