A few things. If proactive works for you, keep using it. You should order ahead, so you always have something in stock. I think you can sign up for a monthly delivery.
If you didn't want to go that route, you should keep a few things in mind. Most importantly, don't over wash your face. I understand the there is need to wash your face when it is greasy or when you have been sweating, but resist temptation to overdue it. When you over wash your face you end up drying it out and destroying the normal epithelial border that protects it--locking in moisture and keep out bacteria. If you have to wash your face allot, I suggest using the Cetaphil brand face wash. It is a very gentle face wash that allows one to wash there face many times a day without over drying. If you still need to moisturize your face, choose a Cetaphil brand lotion.
The best over the counter product for killing acne is benzyl peroxide. Find a product with the lowest concentration, so it doesn't dry out your face. Apply this once a day in all areas of your face to prevent breakouts.

I have tried this, and it works: take the yolk of an egg, beat it lightly and spread it on your face until it's almost dry, then wash off with warm water. Do this on a daily basis for 10 days and it WILL help, because egg yolks are high in vitamin A. Not to mention that a dozen eggs are less than a dollar.
If you don't know how to separate the yolk from the white, this is what you do: gently crack open an egg with a knife around the middle, getting two shell halves. Keep the yolk in one half and dump the whites out of the other. Transfer the yolk back and forth between each half until the whites have gone (do it over the sink). Then dump your yolk into a small bowl and lightly beat with a fork.
Continually washing your face doesn't do much because when you wash it, you're stripping off all the moisture (grease) so your skin just makes more to combat the dryness brought on by washing.
Noxema is a good product to wash with, it smells pretty bad if you're not used to it, but it is gentle enough to use every day. Also, there's lots of soaps out there just for acne, Aveeno had (I haven't purchased it recently, maybe they don't make it anymore, not sure) a special facial soap for people with acne.
Good luck!

NATURAL ACNE PROTOCOL
1/ Never, ever touch your face.
2/ Use 3 facecloths to wash your face, one to soap on, one to soap off with very hot water, one to rinse off with ice cold water, in that order, once a day.
3/ If you are under 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A once a day with a full meal
4/ If you are over 18 take 5,000 IU of vitamin A twice a day with a full meal.
Do not get pregnant while taking vitamin A. Do not take any more, like Accutane, it will stop you growing.
5/ Never, ever. pick, squeeze or pop your spot. Read number 1 again.
6/ Do this for 90 days.
7/ Invest in a brand new pillow and 2 new or more pillow cases to double bag' your pillow. HOT wash every couple of days.

A bit of advice given to me as a teenager, a bit of science as I am studying allergic reactions and vitamin A is a part of that. A bit of research: I sat in a lecture at the back and watched the acne prone pick at their faces, those with the worse acne touched their faces 32 times in an hour, the clearest complexions didn't touch their faces even once. I have circumstantial evidence that acne is the result of dermatophyte transfer from hands to face...where it does not get washed off and is well fed by hormones, sweat a
nd oil...just a hypothesis... But it would explain why vitamin A is so effective as vitamin causes skin to remove dermatophytes.
The secret is never to touch the spots
Tips on how to treat acne and achieve perfect clear skin in as little as 7 days?

use whatever works for you best. Personally I like neutrogena products. I hear stuff like clean & clear and clearasil work good but they both made my face look all red. It's all got to do with skin types. Just keep trying around and find out what works best for you! Good Luck!

I have heard that you can use probiotics like acidipholis and bifidus( the active cultures in yogurt ) in pill form from the drug store. This helps get rid of the stuff in your system that may cause acne and other skin problems

I had acne until I was 30!!! The only thing that kept my face clean but not dry was Nutrogena bar soap, unscented (black & white box) I still use it. Rinse well.
