Some parents aren't comfortable with the rectal method but it is the only accurate way to check a infants' temperature. However if you do decide to use the arm technique you need to add one degree to the reading...i just read jenn's answer i disagree....DO NOT use a mercury themometer...it is not safe whatsoever...for anyone that questions this..ask a doctor. A high temperature can cause the bulb on the end to bust inside of the child's rectum and cause mercury(poisonous to infant's)to get into childs system..

The best and most accurate way to take a 5 month old baby's Temp. would have to be up the rectum. It might be hard and uncomfortable for the baby, but it's the best way. The armpit way and ear way work too. But can lead to giving you a wrong Temp and not knowing how exactly bad it could be. You wouldn't want to use a regular thermometer for it. You would have to go buy a rectum one. There's certain ones that you use. I know this is common since, but never use a mouth one for the rectum. I know a lot of people that have done that. And its really not sanitary at all and could get your baby sick. The rectum one is usually a glass one. If you don't know how to read the glass one, it's really easy, after you're done taking the temp, never hold the mettle bulb at the end, it will change the temp. always hold it at the other end. If you look at it, its kind of a triangle shape. you want the flat part to be facing the back and be looking at the pointy part of the thermometer. every line equals 2. if you have any questions, or you don't get what i mean, and you need more help on anything contact me. I'm going into the medical Field and i kind of know what I'm talking about. My e-mail is frutiepebbles155@hotmail.com. fill free to e-mail with any questions you have.

Rectal is supposed to be most accurate, I think, but you could ask your doctor. I find the ear thermometer to be least accurate, giving VERY different readings within seconds of each try.
It may be most important to keep measuring the temp with the same instrument, so you can see whether the temp has really gone up or down from the base temp.
Hope your baby isn't too sick. Good luck!

hate to tell ya hun, but my mom is a pediatric nurse and the best way to get an accurate temp on a little one is to use the rectal thermometer. A lot of the oral thermometers are made so that you can use them rectally.

I would go for the ear thermometer as a first choice and then the pacifier (they didn't have that when I had mine 12 years ago). You want something that will be as accurate as possible.

I'm an ear thermometer fan. It was quick, accurate, and way less of a power struggle to get done. The only downfall was having to constantly keep the covers on hand since without them it won't take an accurate reading.

I just bought a Temporal Artery thermometer and I LOVE it. You just slide it across their forehead. It's almost as acurate as a rectal thermomer and it's the least invasive thermometer on the market. I got mine at walmart for $35. You can even use it on a sleeping baby, and let's face it---fevers spike at night. I would suggest that anyone who has a baby should buy one.

Without question, the ear thermometers are best. Easy to use and extremely accurate.

I take my childrens' temperature with a digital rectal thermometer that gives a read out in 20 seconds or less. Just make sure if you take it rectally, you subtract one degree. (i.e. if the temperature reads 101.5 rectally, it's actually 100.5)
