I read somewhere that Popeye adoped him. Is that the case? Where did he come from?

In the original E.C. Segar comic strip (Thimble Theater) Sweetpea was left on Popeye's doorstep by Sweetpea's unknown mother. Popeye took the orphink into his home and raised him as his lil' sweetpea.

Later in the comic it was revealed that Sweetpea was actually the crown prince of Spinichovia. And he was placed on Popeye's door because Popeye was a friend of Spinichovia and the King (not Sweetpea's real father) trusted Popeye and knew he was tough enough to protect Sweetpea until he grew up and could take the throne.

That storyline has been forgotten over the years, and the origin of Sweetpea has been retold differently many times. But that was the original story.
