I'd have to say that squats and bench are equally important because when you tackle a guy you have to be able to have the power to drive him backwards or to the ground (which is helped by squats). The squats give you more strength in your butt, thighs, and legs to over-power blockers and running backs. If your on offense they help you have more speed and strength to either run past or run over a defender. If you play offensive line squats give you the power to drive back the defenders so that the running back or the quarterback stay untouched or have time to make the plays they need to make in order to score.

Bench gives you strength for leverage to fight off blocks on defense and tackles on offense. If you play offensive line, bench helps you have the strength up top to drive a guy into the dirt and the strength you get from benching that gives you leverage against the d-linemen can buy your QB enough time to make plays with his arm. If you're a running back or a wide receiver it can help you have the strength to stiff-arm defenders so you can score more easily.

Squats because it involves more larger muscles and is the basis of all leverage, speed, explosiveness, and center of gravity needed to play the game. As a matter of fact, many prgrams are beginning to put the bench press as #4 and even #5 priority in terms of training! Don't get me wrong the bench is still the #1 measure of upperbody strength and is still used as a recruiting tool by colleges, but to pick only one, it would be the squat.

Squat for sure. Power clean does more for you than bench, though

It depends on what position you play..

if you are a lineman you want a strong upper body (Bench)

yet both are important....

and if you are a running back or reciever you want strong legs (squats)

Work on speed and quickness excercises and lots of ab work is also important. Focus on mixing up your workouts and don't keep on the same routines. If you keep doing the same workouts you will see that you will come to a plateau and not see any progress so mix it up by doing lower weights and higher reps and using different type of machines, dumbells and range of motions and then some days go with higher weights and lower reps. Don't forget to do alot of cardio type workouts and some speed workouts on the track. Make sure you eat alot of protien and carbs if your weight is where you want it to be to keep the energy level up and lots of water, gatorade and vitamins. When you start doing 2 a daze...make sure you get plenty of potasium in your diet to keep from cramping!

Squats because it builds your whole lower body. And if you meet hardcore wieght lifters the first question they ask you is your Squat not your bench.

Neither of those is more important because they focus on specific parts of the body. The power clean brings all your body together and makes you work harder. It is the best thing to improve your performance if you can perfect that you can really build up.
