In some countries they have infinate power, in others (like Great Britain) they are simply a figure-head, a symbol of the nation's long life and vitality.

It depends on the country. In England it is almost entirely ceremonial. In Monaco there is close to complete control. There is everything in between thoughout the world. Many good, many bad - just like democracy.
