As a Franco-American with a mom whose birthday is July 14, I can tell you that that day is Bastille Day. It is the most popular day celebrated during the French Revelution although it does not signify an actual day of Independance. It is the day, however, where the commoners stormed the Bastille (a jail in Paris) to free other commoners who were being held for poor reasons (such as being debtors or just begging for food). This event stands out as a major victory for the commoners against the royalty of France.
