Yes and yes. Just because people don't use it correctly or don't know how to use it correctly, doesn't mean it's old hat.

You are correct. It is just that people either forget their grammar or they are not taught correctly in the first place. It can be difficult getting it all right though. I've been educated in English language up to A-level but I am sure there are some things which I still forget or don't know. The "your" and "you're" thing though, is something people should have learned at first school or Kindergarten, whatever you call first school in other places!

Speaking as an English teacher....yes, YOUR is possessive and YOU'RE is 'you are'. If you see anything different, it's because:
1) the person was typing too fast...so, it's a typographical error
2) the person didn't proofread his/her work
3) the person didn't pay attention in English class
4) the person has poor grammar skills
NO, it's NOT just 'old hat'....and tends to communicate that one is an 'uneducated' person (whether true, or not).

the proper use of these words is not old had. While you may think that people in general are ignoring the distinction it is not true.
Although you may not think so now, you will be judged by your grammar as much as anything in your life. If you misuse these words, what you will become know for is something of an uneducated person who either was not smart enough to learn proper English or who was too lazy to do so.

Yes, that is correct. Good grammar and correct form will never be old hat. Either you are well educated or you're not.

even though the use of punctuation changes this one will stay for a long time. the sandals belonging to jesus were jesus' sandals, then jesus's sandals and are now thought to be jesus sandals. To try this with possesive forms would cause a lot of confusion due to nouns and verbs with the same spelling giving different meanings. eg your gay is not the same as you're gay

YOUR is possessive.
YOU'RE is a contraction meaning 'you are'.
These are not old hat, I use them both everyday. It takes practice to learn to use correct English, give yourself credit for knowing how to use proper form & continue doing so -you'll start a trend! :)

I'd not have it any other way. Good grammar is as important as good manners, I hope neither will ever become 'old hat'.
Good luck on your grammatical quest for perfection.

Yes. Correct to both. They are unrelated in their usage. There is probably no sentance where you could substitute one for the other and still make sense.
