Body armor is a recent invention. The vests that they were wearing in Nam were just for the extra pockets for ammo.

It wasnt body armor, it was essentially the same as a hunting vest, just a tool to carry extra ammo or smokes or whatever.

The second answer was correct they were made for shrapnel. because of the bulkiness and the heat in s.e. asia most troops never wore them

flak vests were common but only for shrapnel not bullets.
