I use my laptop primarily for gaming. It's not as comfortable as a desktop, but I enjoy being able to take my games with me. If you're playing anything more sophisticated than internet chess, a good graphics card isn't just important. It's a neccessity. Laptops generally have slower processors and less RAM than desktops, which means they need the extra boost even more. Otherwise, graphics processing sucks up all of your system resources, making your games slow down, lag, freeze, or just not run at all.

On the other hand, if you don't intend to play high end games on your laptop, you probably have no need for a graphics card. The integrated video processing on modern motherboards is sufficient for most applications. Unless you're using it for rendering or engineering applications, you'll just be paying for a component that you'll never use.

EDIT:
Yes, if you want to play Halo at anything resembling a decent framerate, you need some decent graphics equipment. I'm not saying it wouldn't run on a machine without a vid card. It might. It would definitely look horrible and probably lag a good deal. First person shooters have a notoriously high graphics demand. My laptop has an ATI 200 card and high-midrange specs, but still lags sometimes when I play Battlefield 2 with all video settings set to minimum. If you want serious gaming, you need serious gear. Sorry to say, that comes at a price.

Like any computer system, the importance of a graphics card depends on the primary use of the laptop. It is more than possible to play the newest games on a laptop. In fact, several laptops are designed specifically for that purpose. Some of the best are designed by AlienWare www.alienware.com and Falcon Northwest www.falconnorthwest.com .

Be warned: gaming power on a laptop comes at a much higher price than the same specs in PC form. Laptops are also much harder to upgrade than a PC.

Only go for a gaming laptop if you have the money and the need for portability.

P.S. Whatever you do, do not buy a Dell, despite their heavy pro-gaming advertising.

Laptops these days can play games quite well. A graphics card is only as important as you want it to be. If you are a businessman, there is no reason to worry about it. If you are a gamer, it should be thge top priority on a system.

well if u want to play high quality games, u will need a really good laptop, with mass amount of ram and good processor and u would also need to run the laptop off the mains since the battery wil only last about 45mins if that.
there is laptop these days with ati x900 in them but they start about £1000, or about $1800.
