The history has never documented a broader advance in science before. Present day technologies could be used to easily wipe most of the living creatures out from the face of the earth. In addition, our modern way of living is not environmentally friendly; during the last 100 years we exterminated many species and our impact on global weather is causing a disruptions of equilibrium in many biomes. Modernity is permanently claming more and more natural spaces, therefore limiting non renewable resources at a firm pace and at a wolrdwide scale. Moreover, the already existing large breache of social inequalities continues to build up even in the so called first world countries and our legitimately elected politicians are being controlled by private economic pools. Can we find a way to revert our demage and restore overall equilibrium before it is too late?

Of course, we're heading to the end of the world...in a few billion years, when the sun expands and consumes our planet along with the other inner planets. All life on this planet will be extinguished well before that happens. However, human beings may very well extinguish their civilization and themselves sometime in the next few centuries. The problem is not the science. Of course, many well-respected scientists have been speaking out on the problems humanity faces. While some, like James Lovelock, may think we have already passed the point of no return; other scientists argue that we are still within a narrow window of opportunity to halt and perhaps even reverse the destructive policies and technologies that are presently damaging the environment.

The real problem is humanity, its cultures, and its governments. Most people around the world still hold a world view based upon ideas that were held to be valid back in the Stone Age... many people even believe that some supernatural agency will rescue humanity and clean up the world as soon as things have gotten as bad as they can get. Meanwhile, most governments base their decisions upon corporate interests and upon national interests... thus more global problems and their solutions are pretty much ignored. Short-sightedness is the overwhelming curse of humanity and its institutions.

Life will continue in one form or another on this planet, whether there are human beings there to observe said life or not.

Lots of sound and fury there, but the answer is: Of course we are.
A) Entropy will eventually do us in, even if nothing else does.
B) The "world as we know it" didn't exist 50 years ago. What would be most surprising is if it suddenly QUIT changing!
C) You wanta worry, try this. Genetically adapted high altitude peoples cannot stay as far UP as they used to because the air pressure has dropped too far even for their adapted lung capacity.
Means that the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere is dropping. Could be the world as we know it will end by strangulation.
