The bank that offers the most features, no service charges, better interest rates, etc. What exactly are you looking for in a bank?

All banks will treat you wonderfully and make you feel like part of their banking family in order to encourage your funds to be deposited and invested in their bank. Hopefully you will never experience the 'other' side of a bank's business face. If you ever become a victim of identity theft, and expect the bank to help the police or your attorny unravel the crime and restore your credit, here's where you will see some differences. But picking what bank is more supportive and helpful that the other is not easy and maybe impossible to do. They are not you friends under the above circumstances though, because identity theft often means the bank is also 'out' money. Your money.

You may have a small community bank or credit union near you that will be better than any of the big banks.

Ask about fees. Some lie. Totally free checking may not be free. FREE ATMs with at least one bank (compass) is not really free because you have to save the receipts from other atms and mail them to alabama to get credit. Some offer real time, instant credits for deposits (at least most deposits, all banks can hold some checks for a period of time), some don't. Size of the bank doesn't determine quality or service.

Chase sucks! Compass sucks as bad as any bank can.

I joke with the gals at my local Washington Mutual that they should advertise "we suck less." Every bank can have potential problems but how they fix the problems, and their attitude can make a world of difference. I love WaMU here in TX. In CA they are a lot busier and you get less personal attention, but after 30 years as a bank customer. My personal preference is WaMU and I've dealt with B of A, Wells Fargo (also a big sucker), and Chase. Best of luck.

Oh..last comment, at least here in TX (it may be different where you live) ONLY Washington Mutual has completely free ATM cards. They automatically rebate the fees other companie's ATMS charge you. Wachovia does not do that here.

Other banks that say free ATM..mean their machines or they don't charge you to use other machines but you still get stuck with a fee from the other bank.

At the moment, Wa Mu has free checking with really free ATM/MC cards, free checks for life, and one free overdraft a year, plus an overdraft fee that is $5 less than the legal limit in TX (most banks are at the limit) with no minimum balance requirement and no requirement for direct deposit. I even got a free business account with them and NO ONE else does that!

I love Bank of America. They really have taken good care of us. I have a checking account with debit card, a credit card and a savings account with them. It is all accessed via the Internet and even though I hardly ever use the drive through, the girl that works there knows my name before I show her any ID or paperwork. They are the best bank I have used or seen in America.

I know a PB who used to work for Bank of America, and it's gone downhill from her day. I heard from an exco-worker that they got sued for fraudulent overdraft fees. US Bank is their #1 concern, and it seems may be trying to buy them out. I hear good deals from Commerce, but IMHO either go US or a Credit Union.
