yes, I'd say it is powerful at first, even though it is weak against the first gym leaders. It gets even stronger when it evolves into Combusken, then into Blaziken later on. So I'd suggest even though you'll have a tough time in the beginning, it is worth it in the end.Go for it! (I always use Torchic as a starter. Frankly, for some reason, the fire pokemon are the best!)

Torchic is a pretty strong pokemon I prefer Mudkip though.

Yeah, but you'll want to keep it from evolving until it learns flamethrower
