Many people give answers to different subjects they have no clue about. I am wondering myself. But what can you do?

Well, I only answer questions for which I am qualified to answer.

I can't speak for anyone else, but the information I provide is not intended as specific legal advice. Why? Because I am not yet an attorney and giving legal advice is unauthorized practice of law.

But pointing someone in the direction of where the can do their own research, or explaining general concepts so people can narrow down their areas of inquiry -- those are useful non-advice answers.

The other reason that I answer many questions is that it is good preparation for me for the bar (in July), seeing how much I can answer about general legal principles from memory. But I also add a disclaimer reminding the asker to consult with an attorney.

This is a discussion group, and general discussion is fine (with appropriate disclaimers). The problem comes when askers rely on the answers, and yes when people who really don't understand the law give answers that are incomplete.

But that's the way of the world.

Hmm .. but there are many people who may have been in exactly the same situation as the person who posed the question ...and might want to share his or her experience ... in any case, isn't it up to the person who asked the question to verify the answers? I really can't imagine people are acting on the answers received on this site without checking with an attorney anyway ...

Men are known for that whether it be here or in real, etc...

I understand why you would ask a legal question here. Finding legal information on the web is next to impossible. I really think that they do that on purpose to make you have to go pay an attorney.

Well just exactly how do you expect me to get two points if I don't answer? This is an open forum and therefore you are going to get answers which might not be true. You have to decide what is real and what is made up. That my friend is just the way it is.

Why do people seek legal advice on Yahoo Answers? You're opening yourself up to every Joe Schmo who thinks they know.

Kinda reminds me of when some Court case spoke of a Law and Order episode but one problem with that there was no such Episode at all of Law and Order.

Yet the Courts fell for it anyways.

If you want sound legal advice, consult an attorney rather than people on Yahoo answers.
