I don't know much about the Fort Myers area, but I do live in the Florida. Like just about any place, it has it's perks, downfalls, and failures. Crime really depends on where you live. Each place has it's areas where you shouldn't venture, some more so than others just like all cities around the US and the World. Cost of living is relatively low compared to my previous residence in Minnesota because we don't have state taxes here. The average three bedroom, two bath, two car garage home in suburbia goes for anywhere between $135K up to $220K. The beaches with the white sands are beautiful and there's usually some cute shops on beach boardwalks; and you can pretty much find historical points of interest just about anywhere you go if you're interested in such. The ritzest places are in South Florida like West Palm Beach, Palm Beach and Miami; but there is Destin in the Panhandle where celebrities are known to frequent and vacation. The water is warm and comfortable but you do have to be on the lookout sometimes; we do have sharks, stingrays, jellyfish, etc. You will know as soon as a possible danger arises. It is no doubt hot and humid quite a bit; the heat usually starts in mid-May, the hottest months are August and September, and the autumn cooldown begins in/around mid-November; winters are on the warmer side with high temps bouncing around low to mid 30s. Hurricanes are a fact of life you have to be prepared for if you choose to live on the Gulf or Atlantic coasts; Florida did get pounded in 2004, but newer houses are typically built to higher structure standards because of hurricanes. You can always have your home reinforced and have hurricane shutters installed as aids to help minimize damage. Organic foods and flowers are in an abundancy because your food is usually from the farm just a few counties over. We've got the best citrus fruits. If you can take the heat and all the other variances that come your way (just like in any other town or city) then give Florida a try.

It's a good place to live if you have plenty of money.

It's a very 'business friendly' state; that means there is next to no consumer protection or employee rights. If you are used to the social services of states like NY or MI, you are in for a rude awakening in Florida. The public education system is "thank god for Mississippi" bad.

Developers own the state and are unchecked. If you buy a nice cottage on a quiet 2 lane, don't be surprised if 5 years later your road turns into a 6 lane with a Super WalMart across the street. The building and zoning board exists to bring in revenue via issuing variances (exceptions) rather than to protect the quality of life of Florida's citizens.

hell yes but in any city there are bad areas & nice alike so the cost of living varies if you're moving close to the suburbs or touristville. I suggest you go to the city's website & ask the townhall for their criteria direct info. good luck
