Or should it be presented to the class for interpretation and critique by the artist's peers, rather than scrutiny and grading by a teacher?

no art should never be graded, art is someones expression no matter how it looks.

I don't think it should be done in schools at all. A large percentage of children cannot read at grade level, which is more important the ability to read or art. Don't feel that by not teaching art that the kids won't do it. Artistic students will do art on their own.

It is the responsibility of the instructor to measure how a student is progressing in any given skill. Even in art class, there are skills being developed. This development can only be gagued by an educated eye, so the teacher must evaluate (grade) each students' completed task.

I think it gets graded like PE gets graded. Its not how good it is but that u showed up everyday and applied yourself.

akkk kids that age critiquing each other horrible horrible. Most kids that age can't even act like themselves they have to follow the mobs and cliques. Very few would be willing to put an honest opinion on something.

I think the effort should be graded, not the result.
