Because the U.S. isn't a caring nation. With all the non-profit organizations NATION WIDE, and the funds the government has, plus all the religious foundations, you'd think the starvation in Ethiopia would be completely eradicated. Here's some news... we're a money hungry, selfish nation.

"Iraq has OIL. Africa and Sudan have SAND.
The US cares about oil not SAND.
Need I say more!"

Please don't say more because you are TERRIBLY ill informed. Sudan does have oil and that is probably part of the reason that the US has actually shown more interest in SUDAN than it has in the past.

"The Sudan tragedy is not a threat to the United States, but the Iraqi government "was" and is no longer."

Iraq was not a threat to the US. Playing devil's advocate, suppose Iraq did have some of the WMD's that were never founbd? Iraq had no Navy. their airforce (what little they had) was basically obliterated in the first gulf war. we have also had no fly zones setup over the upper and lower 3rd zones of the country since then. they could not even fly a crop duster in 2/3rd of their own country. Was their gutted army supposed to march across europe and the atlantic ocean and attack us?

Anyway, the cold truth is US is capable of being very generous, but obviously cannot intervene in EVERY struggle. The genocide in Sudan and other places probably needed outside intervention more than Iraq but given a choice of places to help, the US like most countries is going to serve it's business interests first. If that happens to coincide with humantitarian goals, fine, but if not it is just less likely. whoever said Sudan refused their help is probably not aware that it is the Arabic Sudanese government (who happens to control the oil that is in the lands of indegenous people), who does not want "help" for obvious reasons; they don't need it. The ones bein killed need the help. I'm sure the people of Iraq did not want to be invaded no matter how much they hated Saddam, but we invaded anyway, so that's a BS excuse. it's all about business.

It is an issue that arose in 1648 in Westphalia. The treaty signed there established the modern state system, one issue the treaty addressed being that of state sovereignty (others being nonintervention, diplomacy, etc.) . The reason the U.S. does not intervene is that doing so would violate the sovereignty of these states in Africa. The question then arises, why does the West intervene in other areas of the world? I have no concrete answer to that except that it is a matter of cost-benefit.

Because we're not the worlds police and last I heard, the UN is handling that situation. Ask your government what they're doing for the poor people over there.
